Understanding Challenge Vs. Risk

Understanding Challenge Vs. Risk

In sport and life balancing the rush against danger is both calculated and un-calculated. When all chaos breaks out every decision matters and your life can drastically change in a fraction of a second.

So what does this have to do with stand up paddle boarding and skiing? Quite frankly a lot! If you were to believe all the ads and messages of the various equipment manufacturers and training organizations they all make it seem like a walk in the park. Understanding your  physical, emotional, and psychological capabilities and where you are now is key for success, enjoyment, and development.

When we look at plans for training its the measured dosages of stimuli that give you the safest and longest lasting results. You can’t just immediately dive into a 350lb deadlift without a base and proper lifting technique.

Just like with paddling, you wouldn’t want to dive into a 12 mile coastal downwinder without significant experience in addition to assessing the risk verses the reward. As many of you prepare for SUP racing and training or mid-winter ski trips, remember it’s ok to enjoy it the way you want it as long as you’re feeling safe.

Am I a buzz kill or am I just an old dog with many years of experience as coach and someone that has made some terrible mistakes without assessing risk in my sports.

Going forward in 2023 I wish you all health - well being and enjoyment of the rush, but please know when to opt out and live for anther day!
